HISTORY OF COMINAD Several years ago, a group of people, interested in mobilizing African-American churches for missions became increasingly aware of a divided Christian community, consisting of individuals, churches and para-church organizations. All were working hard to evangelize, but results were limited because of the efforts lacked coordination and resources. They envisioned these parts of the body of Christ coming together in a common vehicle to accomplish the task of world evangelization. These groups wanted to work together even though they were from different churches. There were so few Christians interested in world missions within Black churches that they needed the comradeship and expertise that each person, church and organization could offer. They wanted the encouragement of a collective relationship without losing their own individual identities and distinctives. The main thrust of the vehicle would be mobilization of African American Christians (Churches) for involvement in cross-cultural world missions. They decided to meet in Atlanta, GA in 1997 to see whether they had a common cause and if they could work together. After much discussion, they decided to have another meeting in Los Angeles, CA in the spring of 1998, inviting more people, churches and organizations of all races. At the California meeting, they decided to move forward and adopted the name, “The Cooperative Missions Network of the African Dispersion”, with the acronym, COMINAD. They determined they could work together for the common purpose of the mobilization of the descendants of Africa toward involvement in Biblical missions, consistent with the Great Commission of Matthew 28:16-20. Their next meeting was set for October 1998, to further develop the structure and invite others to participate as partners. They appointed an action committee to work out the details. In March of 1999, the operating agreement of COMINAD was adopted and they became an organization. The Cooperative Missions Network of the African Dispersion papers were filed in the Commonwealth of Virginia and they became a Limited Liability Company.
